The Eyelash Effect
.
It is said that a butterfly flapping its wings can have a profound effect on distant weather:
In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions; where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state. Wikipedia
There is just such a profound effect that many of us have experienced firsthand. I call it the eyelash effect.
It works like this:
Boy sees girl.
Girl sees boy who sees her.
Girl lowers, or flaps, her eyelashes.
Nine months later, YOU are born!
I listed the steps of the effect in the present tense to make it sound more immediate, which isn’t entirely accurate because you are already here. And does it all come down to the eyelashes? Hardly. Eyelash flapping alone does not cause a sperm and egg to make contact. There are quite a few intermediary steps, just as there is not an immediate hurricane when a butterfly flaps its wings. In the best case scenario, love is involved ~ for the boy and girl, that is.
I don’t know about the butterfly.
It All Comes Down To This
Maybe that’s what it all comes down to. Love, not as a surge of passion, but as a choice to commit to something, someone, no matter what obstacles or temptations stand in the way. And maybe making that choice, again and again, day in and day out, year after year, says more about love than never having a choice to make at all.” ……~ Emily Giffin, from Love the One You’re With
P.S. This is a commercial, but I had to include it–it’s so clever.
P.S.S. One of the funniest Monty Python skits I ever saw is about foreplay. This is an instructive video for those who want to know more about the intermediary steps referred to above.
