Terrifying Clarity

Eruptions. We all have them. The question is, after the lava has flowed and a few people have been burned, what do we do?

Eruption

Feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we’re holding back. They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we’d rather collapse and back away. They’re like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we’re stuck. This very moment is the perfect teacher, and, lucky for us, it’s with us wherever we are. ………..~ Pema Chodron

I really resonate with Pema Chodron’s take on anger, because rather than beating ourselves up about it (more anger), we can feel grateful that it has shown us where we’re stuck. We now know, with “terrifying clarity,” another issue that needs to be worked on in our lives.

Then there’s good old Phyllis Diller, who enjoyed being angry (at least as far as getting a laugh out of it was concerned).

Never go to bed mad. Stay up and fight. ………..~Phyllis Diller
