Couple all that with very practical exercises to guide the artist and you have a teacher who is gifted at unearthing inherent meaning. Here is an example of one of those exercises:

When we come to a certain point in our art play process, we do a five minute free write – writing whatever comes, non-stop.  I love the freedom in art to cross over boundaries of logic and participate in multiple, simultaneous realities.

Or how about “painting positives on one side of the page and negatives on the other.”

Turns out that was a real brain twister, but just the sort of exercise that hones ones watercolor skills. And botanicals were the perfect opportunity.

Susan’s descriptions of an owl, flapping above her banked kayak, clearly illustrates the poetic heart that beats within her artistic vision:

Such a common name for an uncommon creature, glamorous in your snowy robes, heart shaped face and sage’s eyes.  Did we wake you from some midday slumber?  Or were you giving us an owl greeting with slow flapping of those angel wings above the bank where we’d landed our kayaks for a picnic lunch – right after the skimming swallows, egrets, white pelicans, turtles, and loudly chattering Stilts. . . welcoming or warning?

Yes, Susan is a backpacking, kayaking artist extraordinaire, and I believe that one of the reasons she relates so completely to all things winged is that she communes with  angels, regularly, in her dreams and meditations.
