Mathematically Precise and Diaphanous

.

I am grinning as I think of people puzzling over my blog post title, but it will soon become clear.

I am still on a crochet binge.

I started our with a 1 mm crochet hook, and realized I would need approximately 220 squares to complete my small project.

I then switched to a 3.50 mm hook. You can see the larger square should require considerably fewer motifs to complete my crochet garment. It also has a softer hand, which means it will drape better in the final analysis.

Do I have nothing else to do, you might ask, than sit and do this rather laborious work?

Oh yes, I would reply. I have MUCH to do, but cannot seem to drag myself away from this obsession. There is something so magical about plying ultra thin thread with a tiny hooked instrument and producing wondrous, lacy,  mathematically precise (at least after it is blocked), diaphanous clothing.

I suppose, as obsessions go, this one is relatively harmless. And, I keep telling myself, I am contributing to the continuance and resurgence of fine hand crafted goods.

Crocheted Lace Squares

If more people knitted and crocheted, the world would see fewer wars and a whole lot less road rage.” – Lily ChinA loop after a loop. Hour after hour my madness becomes crochet. Life and art are inseparable. – OlekA crocheted piece is the lovely manifestation of a thought, expressed through hand, heart, hook, and yarn. – Francine ToukouThe great doilies are stories in crochet, with a beginning, character development, and plot twists, periods of conflict, growth, and redemption. And the best of them have slam-bang endings. ~ Doris ChanGeometry and Nature inspire me.  I especially love the geometry of nature.  I LOVE creating textiles from things I see in other mediums.  For example: beautiful tile work, seashell shaping, water movement, or even the texture of a snake’s skin or alligator’s scales. ~ Kristin Omdahl from interview

As you can see from this short sampling of crochet artist quotes, they are an intelligent, creative bunch that I am proud to be associated with.
