It Sounded Like A Good Idea At the Time

An idea can catch people’s imaginations and grow from a few sparks into a raging conflagration. Such an idea is almost impossible to quell. Whether for good or for ill, that idea will have its reign and many will be mere kindling in its flames.

Marianne Williamson expressed it this way:

When an idea reaches critical mass there is no stopping the shift its presence will induce.

Victor Hugo said:

All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

Oliver Wendell Holmes stated:

One’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.

Only John Cleese, in typical fashion, postulates that the whole “great idea” thing is probably a fluke or accident:

The really good idea is always traceable back quite a long way, often to a not very good idea which sparked off another idea that was only slightly better, which somebody else misunderstood in such a way that they then said something which was really rather interesting.
