Carol Wiebe
Don’t Be Afraid of Yourself
Life is a circle.
Ever Widening Circle
How exhilarating it is when we keep going around and around to our favorite places, with our significant others, busy at the things we love doing. When it rotates through these familiar scenes like a well-oiled merry-go-round, life is fun and joyful.
When our experiences go awry, and things happen we didn’t foresee, don’t like and want even less, we cry for our misery to stop. The merry-go-round is now a wheel in a cage, and we feel like rodents ~ trapped animals with no control over our lives.
There are other ways of looking at how our lives unfold, such as the fact that the circle we are in at present is simply one of an ever widening series of circles:
Never, never rest contented with any circle of ideas, but always be certain that a wider one is still possible. ……..~ Pearl Bailey
Einstein believed that compassion was the necessary component we must nurture in order to find freedom:
Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty. ……..~ Albert Einstein
There are those who actually believe we can control our own destiny. But to manifest that control, we must realize our own power.
This scene from the movie “Akeelah and the Bee” alludes to such a belief:
Akeelah: [quoting Marianne Williamson] Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. Dr. Larabee: Does that mean anything to you? Akeelah: I don’t know. Dr. Larabee: It’s written in plain English. What does it mean? Akeelah: That I’m not supposed to be afraid? Dr. Larabee: Afraid of what? Akeelah: Afraid of . . . me?
