Burn It All Clean

We often think our blood ties predetermine who and what we are ~ including what we can do, whom we can love.

Even blood ties cannot make up for what your inner self really wants. Let’s say you became a lawyer, because your parents expected you to. Your father had been one, perhaps was now the head of a firm, as was his father before him.

Or, everyone in your family appreciates sports, goes to all the games, and you just want to make music.

If your heart is not in what you are doing, family approval and a good salary cannot dispel the bitterness that gradually eats your gut from the inside out, tainting your relationships, spoiling your joy.

Getting angry about it can be a very positive step. It means you are saying “This is who I am. I love my family, I respect my ancestors, but there is a voice inside me that I must follow and no-one, not even blood relations, have the right to stop me.”

Sometimes being a failure at what others want you to do is the best move you can make towards securing your own happiness.

Bitterness is like cancer. It eats upon the host. But anger is like fire. It burns it all clean. ……~ Maya Angelou I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water. ……~ Ray Charles
