This is my entry for the 2011 Grand National Quilt Show, that will take place in The Joseph Schneider Haus in Kitchener, from May 15 to September 11, 2011. My paper quilt is called Broken, and is 34″ wide x 35″ high.
Passing from Wholeness into Brokeness is a journey every one of us has taken. The border between them is tissue thin, often invisible. It is a delicate balancing act to maintain your grip on sanity after an event abducts you, then leaves you broken. …………….. Some of us travel deeper into Wholeness, others fall headlong into Brokeness but none can claim they have not carried baggage between them. And believe it or not, there is a certain fulfillment in being broken ~ when striving has ceased and life is realized as something to simply revere, no matter what .. state we find ourselves in. .. ……………..~ Carol Wiebe
Please note that the jagged black pieces around the outside of the quilt are only painted in Photoshop Elements; when I needed to send in a pic to the jury, that section was clear in my mind, but it is easier to show than tell. I’ll take a better photo at the show. As usual, I was under the gun, and didn’t even get a chance to take a picture of the completed quilt before it had to be delivered.
I am slated to teach a class on designing and constructing paper quilts in New York state this October (2011) at Quilting By the Lake 2.
If you like what I am up to, consider joining me at QBL2. I know we could be a fantastic creative team! It is a wonderful teaching opportunity for me, but I need YOU to register and make sure it happens. I am totally committed to my students when I teach. My goal is to facilitate something incredible happening. When a group of people get together with the intention of throwing all caution to the wind and aim for the skies, artistically, the incredible does happen. I think (surprise, surprise) that my paper quilting techniques are a great avenue for moving an idea from the head to an art piece very quickly.
