Biomimicry and Mushroom “Plastic”

You’ve heard the term filthy rich?

I hope Eben Bayer gets filthy rich over his team’s discovery of MycoBond, because it is a fantastic, earth-friendly material that fits the principles which should govern how we produce materials:

Firstly, they should be able to be created almost anywhere on the planet. Secondly, they should require considerably less energy to produce than current materials. Lastly, they should be able to be disposed of by nature’s wonderful open-source recycling system.    ~ Eben Bayer

This is biomimicry that assists a consumer society right at the crux of its addiction: packaging. Of course, if all our products were as earth friendly as this packaging, consumerism wouldn’t be an issue.

Biomimicry is an emerging discipline that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems.

Greensulate, which is the world’s first sustainable rigid board insulation.

The photo gallery gives you a glimpse of these self-assembling materials. I just had to write that again: it is so wonderfully amazing to contemplate.

A piece of treeless, biodegradable shipping material that can be molded into as many shapes as polystyrene, without causing ecocide.

This video will make your day, if not your decade. Discoveries like this are what can continue to make human occupation of this beautiful planet possible.

I take back what I said about Eben and his team getting filthy rich. They will get cleanly rich, if the rest of us are smart enough to take advantage of his discovery.
