Anne Bagby
I just received the Anne Bagby DVD entitled COLLAGE: Paper, Patterns & Glazing from Creative Catalyst Productions. Oh, honey, my head is spinning with possibilities. I can hardly walk or think straight. Perhaps after I’ve made a few pieces inspired by her process, I’ll be able to settle down a little. The thing is, I have waited for this DVD for months, and it did not disappoint. Creative Catalyst has done its usual superb job of filming and editing. I have tried DVDs from other companies and have yet to find any that match the quality, and have the extra features, of CCP products.
Watching Bagby make collage papers and complicated papers is fascinating. She stamps with her own carved stamps, she collages, she paints. If that doesn’t sound unusual, check out her results!! I, for one, cannot stop caressing them with my eyes. The figures have a dignity and a presence, and details here and there (a dog, a flower) suggest a narrative and relationships that your mind, if it works like mine, wants to explore further. Bagby puts patterns together in a way that is very unique, and which is so much a part of her signature style that she keeps insisting how easy it is. Uh-huh. It’s definitely doable, and highly enjoyable, but it would take more than a little bit of practice to display the results Bagby accomplishes.
Try it yourself. I, for one, would be delighted to see your attempts. I will show you mine as soon as I can make myself stop creating “complicated papers.”
