What do you see? he asked, but really didn’t want to know.
She didn’t answer. There was light all around her, but a certain sadness filled her eyes, and shadows seemed poised to engulf her.
Although he had not believed he wanted an answer, her deep stare, the utter silence, were somehow more unsettling than any words she might have uttered.
Please say something. The question surprised him. Even more surprising was the fact that it was his voice asking it.
