    The Best of Both Worlds

It will be 18 months, at the end of this month, that I have been posting every single day. It was part of my goal to also post at least one image every day. In that time, I have created many digital images because they were the easiest way to express myself. However, they are just the tip of the iceberg. I have been painting, but I can’t make a painting every day. Some artists are expert croppers who can show you parts of a painting, or stages of a painting, and thus get a lo

Why I Have Added the iPad to my Workflow

A comment I received on yesterday’s post, from Ellen, was a wonderful one because it gave me pause and made me think. Her questions were: 1–How does an iPad add to your work? Then she partially answered it: Lots of experimentation, quickly modified or erased, no mess, when you’ve got something you like… move on! 2–Can’t you get the same results on any laptop or computer? 3–Does iPad offer a superior platform, or is it just a matter of portability? For her, the fact that the c

    Stuck

I’m stuck on the image I created for yesterday’s post. I have made many variations of the same image, and still do not have one I feel completely satisfied with. I simply do not have the skill to create what is in my mind yet. And really, that should come as no surprise. If we could easily produce what we can imagine, in any area of our lives, we would be living in Utopia. Or would we? How often do you change your mind about what you want? Don’t Tell

Last night, I grabbed a piece of plain, computer paper along with a magazine, needle and black thread, and a black pen. I started ripping pieces out of the paper and sewing magazine scraps behind them. Other bits of pages were added on top. I let my needle be my pen, and sometimes I drew with the actual pen ~ like that face near the top right corner. Original stitched collage This morning, I scanned the collage and fixed it up a bit. Fixed up collage Some would call this an i

    Drawing Challenges

When Margi asked the class to draw their own faces, a nervous tension stole into the room. Drawing is a challenge for many artists: they are confident in other ways, but drawing has the power to terrify. With a few tips, and lots of encouragement, everyone went on to produce a face, and attach it to a paper doll. The end results were both satisfying, and hilarious. No-one could prevent a giggle from slipping out as they passed the paper doll wall. Here is the face I drew. I l

    The Benefits of Being Silly

Carla Sonheim is teaching an online drawing class called Drawing, Collage, Color, and Silly. Here’s her scoop: Each day I will create an Activity Sheet just for you. Worksheets may include one (or more) of the following: drawing exercises (can’t draw? YES YOU CAN!), journaling prompts, a poem to illustrate, writing exercises, spelling words, drawing games, collage prompts, puzzles… (just to name a few). FUN! I think this worksheet idea is brilliant! And her prerequisites

    Design Generating Activity

A favorite activity is to grab a magazine or catalogue, and use the products, ads, or anything else inside, to generate designs. A magazine or catalogue can help generate a stack of great designs. All you need are a few pads of thin, white paper and a black pen. I also do this at meetings, doctor offices, or even visits with friends: I start to draw based on what I see around me. It is relaxing, conversation inducing, and keeps your inner artist well fed. These drawings are t

    My Color Bookshelf 1

Here are some of the the books from my book shelf which focus on color: Color: a course in mastering the art of mixing colors by Betty Edwards I bought this book because I had found Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain very helpful for improving my drawing, and reasoned that Color would do the same for my color sense. I also received a high recommendation from my sister, who worked through all the exercises. Color choices: making color sense out of color theory by Stephen
