I often take photos of petals, flowers, stems, twigs, leaves and so on that fall onto sidewalks, roads and patios. I love playing with the calligraphy they form. Memories Keep Surfacing

I did another version of the collage I was working on yesterday. I gave this one a new name: As much as we want to live in the present, we can’t resist those memories that keep surfacing. I also took a photo of the reverse side (back) of the original collage, which can be used to add lines and shapes to a piece by adding it as a layer in Photoshop Elements. Last night, I grabbed a piece of plain, computer paper along with a magazine, needle and black thread, and a black pen. I started ripping pieces out of the paper and sewing magazine scraps behind them. Other bits of pages were added on top. No, it’s not dirt about somebody. It’s just plain dirt. I took this outside of Perth Hall, where the Gathering Threads Conference was. If something catches my eye, and I have my camera on me, I take it. I did get a startled look from a passerby. That lets me know I’m on the right track. What Is Going On?

I’ve been thinking about the differences between collage and painting. When I use paint, and only paint, there is great excitement involved in anticipating the outcome. Risks are high. Once I have painted over something, what lies beneath is gone. With collage, I can see exactly how colors and patterns go together. I can place a collage element here or there, and know that when I place it, it will look as good as my eye judged it to be. There is less guesswork. Soon, however,

The deadline continues

A deadline can rattle you, or spur you on. Actually, it probably does both~ back and forth, over and over. I collaged together some of those papers made from green paint on magazine pages, together with a leftover pink/wine paint “underpainting” that I didn’t consider worth scanning. Here is a simply fabulous idea. I’m sure you have all heard of Breakdown Printing with Leslie Morgan and Claire Benn of Committed to Cloth. And then, of course, there is the amazing Kerr Grabowski, who calls her way of loading a screen with thickened dyes Deconstructed Screen Printing. Dijanne Cevaal was “cruising blogs” and “saw mention of using water color pencils and breakdown printing.” A light bulb went off and she used watercolor crayons on the screen in place of dyes.
