    Let’s Face It

I love the combination of the face and/or figure, with an abstract ground. That has been my focus lately. Let’s face it, we all see visages everywhere. Just try looking at a detailed abstract without spotting faces. We are wired to see them. I see them, and then draw in more detail. Turn Over Another Leaf Are we to paint what’s on the face, what’s inside the face, or what’s behind it? …..~ Pablo Picasso I never forget a face, but in your case I’ll be glad to make an exception

Like A Fox After A Rabbit

Sometimes I ask myself WHY I am so compelled to create. I only have to catch a glimpse of a color, a texture, a shape, and I want to grab something, ANYTHING, and make some art, to follow that prompting like a fox after a rabbit. Remember yesterday’s backgrounds? And the drawing of a face from the day before that?Today, I pulled them both into Photoshop Elements and played around with different opacities until I found a  few combinations I liked. Revel in Being a Master of Integration

. I found this pic of a small piece of cloth I once painted, and got a craving for painting some abstracts. Blue Painted Cloth This is how it works for me: I follow my cravings, and use the appropriate skills I already have, or experiment with new ones, in order to satisfy them. I do not consider it a problem to have a large menu of skills and techniques at my disposal. It just takes a while to work my way through practicing them all. There are people who employ the phrase “j

    When You Can’t Draw, Paint

When she couldn’t draw any conclusions about a difficult issue in her life, she went and painted instead. Draw Your Own Conclusions You don’t get much more abstract than that. #paint #conclusions #CWWOL20111022 #abstract #issue #draw

    Thumbnails

I have two of these, like most people, and that is nothing new. Thumbnail sketches are nothing new either–artists have been making them forever, for many reasons. I am VERY interested in creating them, scads of them, hordes of them. But, like any practice you want to assimilate, you must find a way to make it fit into your habitual patterns. I often doodle ~ mostly with lines. Now I will doodle in an additional mode, exploring value. Using thumbnails is a terrific way to do t

Lilies, Nests, Floating Homes and Longboarders (with bananas)

I visited Granville Island this week and was literally stopped in my tracks when I came upon a painting by artist Janie Lockwood. I saw Connecting and quickly motioned my sister to gaze upon its loveliness as well. The online pic of this painting does not do it justice, of course. The detail and texture are subtle, and must be seen “live” to be fully appreciated. As Janie articulates in her artist statement: My focus has been to emphasize on the beauty of nature. I do this by

    The Indomitable Virginia Cobb

The word indomitable popped into my head when I thought about Virginia Cobb, and all that I had seen and learned after viewing the DVD “Acrylic Abstract Painting: The Evolving Image.” Here is a woman of strength, who is audacious and adventurous enough to go wherever her art takes her. I have now added taking a course with her in Sante Fe onto my wish list. Angel Angel ~ by Virginia Cobb (used with permission) Cobb demonstrates how to build a foundation, then structure a pain
