Use a Book to Make Purse: Especially If You Don’t Like the Book

My friend Jan recently attended the One of a Kind Show in Toronto, where a mutual friend, Laurie Skantzos, has a booth displaying her paintings (see more on her website). Jan mentioned some purses made from book covers, which really piqued my curiosity. Scribbit has a tutorial on how to make a purse out of a book. She retrieved the method from Shari Haab’s Designer Style Handbags: Techniques and Projects For Unique, and Elegant Designs From Classic to Retro. (Haab will NOT ne

    Verbal Gumption

I have been in Winnipeg for a few days, celebrating Christmas with my husband’s family. I was determined to just let the blog alone for the duration, but then I read my email and discovered a free ebook from Seth Godin. Godin offers the following summary for his timely book: Here are more than seventy big thinkers, each sharing an idea for you to think about as we head into the new year. From bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert to brilliant tech thinker Kevin Kelly, from pub

    Sharon Cummings Speaks Abstract

That is her language. Can you “hear” it? If you study her paintings, I have a feeling you will either love them, or hate them. I, for one, think they are fabulous. ASCENSION by Sharion Cummings (Used with permission) Sharon is quite capable of creating a representational painting, but: I would get so caught up in getting it “right” that any imagination and creativity went out the door. I got A’s in college for figure drawing, still life, etc. My technical skills were very go

    Color Surrounds Us

I have been mixing and painting many little color samples to put on charts, as I work through Judy Coates Perez’s color theory course. The charts are lined up like tiny cardboard quilts. Or small maps leading me to different destinations in the world of color. Color surrounds us, and we have certain preferences about the colors we see. However, mixing colors in a systematic way has made me more analytical about the way I interact with color. I look at an object, note its colo

    Primordial Ideas and Deeper Mysteries

Color Wheel From Wikipedia Judy Coates Perez has been mentioned in my blog a number of times. I appreciate her creative talents, her energy, and her generous spirit. So I bought one of her DVDs during the Christmas season as a gift to myself, and I enrolled in her Color Theory online class. That class begins today, and already I have declared mysef a Color Devotee. What do I mean by that? Well, it was a quote by Mark McCauley, from his book COLOR THERAPY AT HOME: real-life so

Tyrrell Is Good at Making a Mark

Katherine Tyrrell from London, England, is a very prolific writer. No matter which of her various sites you visit, you will be deluged with information~good information. Katherine obviously likes to do research and is not afraid to express opinions or give advice. Probably the best place to start is at her hub. From there you are only a click away from her art portfolio, writing publications, and a host of resources, many of which are free. If that isn’t enough, she is consta

    Capturing an image

It’s the last day before September, the month that has always felt like the beginning of a new year for me.  Many years of schooling, and then teaching, have ensured that my emotional New Year’s Day is the first day of school. As a symbol of the new year, I choose this flying crow. I have a thing for crows: anyone who has even glimpsed at my work can attest to this fact. My initials could be a factor: CAW. Why crows? There are many reasons: crows are intelligent, with complex
