    Steeling You For Revelation

David Whyte is not a typical poet. He performs his readings to share his own writing, which will stir your soul, and the poetry of others, which he finds inspirational and expects others will too. Actually, he knows from experience that they will, because Whyte has been bringing poetry to the corporate world for decades, and challenging people to deepen their understanding and practice of the work they do. He thinks this is essential for deriving meaning and satisfaction from

    Not All Feelings Are Equal

. They say no-one is an island, but I feel like one. Her sigh was such a heavy one. You know I love you, don’t you? It was hard to see her feeling so lonely when he was right there. I do, she said. But I feel as if I’m not worthy of anyone’s love, that I deserve to be alone. Then don’t listen to the hateful feelings. He wasn’t sure it was a helpful thing to say, but he was desperate. What do you mean? She looked him right in the eyes, then. When loving feelings and hateful fe

Collage and green paint change everything

I’ve added collage, and green paint, to yesterday’s painting. It looks quite different. Painting in progress I will tackle the inner pieces after the green paint dries. Later on in the evening, I started thinking about my purpose–not only for starting this blog, but for making art in the first place. It is for self revelation. I have this instrument, my embodiment, which in my philosophy consists of body and spirit. The two work in tandem. Often, we get so carried away with p

    Steeling You For Revelation

Read the introduction on poet David Whyte‘s page, and your spirit will be utterly seduced by his: P O E T R Y The poet lives and writes at the frontier between deep internal experience and the revelations of the outer world. There is no going back for the poet once this frontier has been reached; a new territory is visible and what has been said cannot be unsaid. The discipline of poetry is in overhearing yourself say difficult truths from which it is impossible to retreat. P

    It’s a Wonderful Life

My title is also the title of a classic Christmas film, starring Jimmy Stewart, where a suicidal man gets another kick at the can, thanks to a bumbling angel named, what else, Clarence. You may love It’s a Wonderful Life or hate it, but many artists use that state of wonder that George Bailey achieved in the movie to make art. Robert Henri, famous for The Art Spirit, employed “wonder” as a teaching strategy: The object isn’t to make art, it’s to be in that wonderful state whi

    As Promised: New Paper Quilts!

I am really excited about the direction my work is taking me. I was going to save the revealing of the following pieces for my solo show, but decided to put them up anyway. “Saving” things is definitely overrated. I call it the Sunday Shoes Syndrome, because as a young girl I had shoes, and whole outfits, that could only be worn on Sundays for church. There were other occasions these Sunday clothes could be worn, but never just for ordinary events. SSS generalizes to ridiculo

    Another Revelation . . .

Just the other day I posted a new piece of work. I commented that I wasn’t sure if it was finished. Today, I went to the edge of the abyss, as Carla O’Connor would say: I completely covered one side of my paper quilt with white, so I would have to repaint it. This is the kind of risk that, O’Connor teaches, actually encourages us to grow as artists. It’s when we “let go” of the product, of being afraid to ruin the piece as it is so far, and just get lost in the process. It’s
