    A Passionate Exploration

I am teaching two classes this summer: Open Book for the Altered Ego at Wellington County Museum (see page 3 of the brochure) and Stitched Paper Explorations at Southampton Art School & Gallery. I am passionate about working with paper. Its marvellous capacity to accept any mark making method I throw at it (sometimes literally), every stitch I take through it, every cut, tear, and fold I put into it, never fails to excite and delight me. I want to share that excitement with y

    A New Paint Job

That matte from A Good Fit now has a new paint job. Don’t let the black stitched area behind the matte fool you: it’s part of another project. Stitched Matte Gets A New Paint Job #CWWOL20110328 #newpaintjob #matte #AGoodFit #stitchedmatte #paper #quilted

    Framed

I used my Cracked Paper Quilt technique to make a frame for the stitched piece, or matte, if you prefer. I can make it as wide or as thick as I like, and make as many as I want, in any shape. I think the two (the stitched painting and the matte) are very compatible. I can make them in contrasting or matching colors. I can add beads, or found objects. I like having those kinds of options, without having to go hunting at a framing store. #framingstore #matte #frame #options #pa

No-one can say I haven’t stitched this piece enough.

No-one can say I haven’t stitched this piece enough.

STOP, already! Do you think I’ve been carried away a bit? I just have to laugh. Next, I start painting again. Don’t worry, those edges will get covered. You will also notice that the thread pulls at the paper a bit (and makes visible holes), but when one knows one will be adding paint again, it doesn’t matter. You’ll see! #acrylic #painting #paper #stitch

    Crow flies in

A crow suddenly flew onto my page. Crows frequently do that around me. You can see a bit of the Inside Front Cover (version 4) page to the right. Leaving the page alone – for now

This is how I’m going to leave the inside of the front cover, for now. I toned it down quite a bit so it didn’t overpower the facing page. Inside front cover (version 3) The facing page is not quilted. I lay awake last night, thinking up new ways to combine quilted pages with those that are not. I am enamoured with the idea of creating a quilted frame for each little painting , or creating CPQ “wrapped canvases.” #WiebeWayApplique #editallowaccess #mantra #Spirithouse #Artjou

I can’t seem to stop stitching

And paper is what I love to stitch the most. I just finished stitching his little “Spirit House,” and glued it onto the inside cover of an art journal I am working on. Soon, I will be adding more paint, gesso, whatever the hand reaches for at the moment. Stitched paper element #paper #Spirithouse #stitch #WiebeWayApplique

Cracked Paper Quilts 2: Stitching the Paper Sandwich

My second video about making Cracked Paper Quilts is now ready to view. This time, the paper top that was created in the first video becomes the top layer of my quilt sandwich. Then I begin to sew the dickens out of it. You can also view it by going to Cracked Paper Quilts 2: Stitching the Paper Sandwich on Vimeo. #quilting #art #layers #quiltsandwich #Paper #CrackedPaperQuilts #quiltlayers #Artquilt #layer #QuiltingArtsissue39 #mixedmedia #CrackedPaperQuiltsVideo #Paperquilt

    Paper Quilts! I’m smitten!

Something happened to me at that Fran Skiles workshop while we were cutting, ripping, burning, painting, inking, monoprinting, gluing, crumpling, folding, stitching, and who knows what else to paper: I FELL IN LOVE WITH PAPER, all over again! How could I forget my childhood sweetheart? The one I cozied up to any chance I got, and produced pictures with my trusty Laurentian Pencil Crayons (I received a new box every September). I have WAY more stuff to use on paper now! I cann

My Quilting Arts Article Has Hit the Stands!

I have had a wonderful few months, with my work in two shows (including a National show here in Canada) , a trip to Nancy Crow’s amazing Timber Frame Barn to take a week long course with Fran Skiles, and now my article published in issue 33 of Quilting Arts! My first peek at the cover was on the Joggles website. Autumn Equinox Some of my friends and acquaintances are not familiar with the quilting world, and would say “Quilting what?” when I excitedly informed them that I was

    More Maggie Grey, Please

It all started when the book Raising the Surface with Machine Embroidery first jumped out of an ad and into my consciousness. I had to have it–no checking it out from the public library first to make sure it was worth it. And was it worth it? Yes, a thousand times yes. Then came Paper, Metal and Stitch. Was I satiated? No, I had to have the CD, which I found at a stitching show in Toronto (I think the woman manning the booth was quite startled by my shopper’s war cry when I n
