    Finding That Emotional Connection

In October, I viewed a documentary about an a creature that has held my fascination for years. A Murder of Crows described the common crow as “one of the most intelligent, playful and mischievous species on the planet.” After learning that the crow can fashion tools and recognize faces, I became even more enamored with this species. However, I do not anthropomorphize them into smart and sinister bad boys of the bird world. I am not sure exactly why my head always turns when I

    Snail Mail Still Delivers

I hardly send a letter anymore; email has ruined my postal patience. Sending a letter is excruciatingly, and not very trustworthy. The Letter carrier’s code has gone awry.  I have also become reliant on click-able links to add interest to my missive. But snail mail still delivers a few things that email, as yet, cannot. Parcels, for instance. All my online book purchases and DVDs arrive in my mailbox. And my magazines. Every time a package arrives, I grab it and put it aside

That last quilt for my solo show is finally done . . . and I’m exhilarated enough to shout “Whee!” Also, I call completing a quilt “taking it home;” hence, the nursery rhyme reference. The title of the quilt is Messengers, and it is 36″ wide by 44″ long. I’ve worked on it for about 3 years. Everything is hand pieced and hand stitched. The edges have a crocheted binding. The fabric is my own hand painted fabric. After quilting, I keep painting. The first time I painted onto a

    As Promised: New Paper Quilts!

I am really excited about the direction my work is taking me. I was going to save the revealing of the following pieces for my solo show, but decided to put them up anyway. “Saving” things is definitely overrated. I call it the Sunday Shoes Syndrome, because as a young girl I had shoes, and whole outfits, that could only be worn on Sundays for church. There were other occasions these Sunday clothes could be worn, but never just for ordinary events. SSS generalizes to ridiculo

    Capturing an image

It’s the last day before September, the month that has always felt like the beginning of a new year for me.  Many years of schooling, and then teaching, have ensured that my emotional New Year’s Day is the first day of school. As a symbol of the new year, I choose this flying crow. I have a thing for crows: anyone who has even glimpsed at my work can attest to this fact. My initials could be a factor: CAW. Why crows? There are many reasons: crows are intelligent, with complex
