    A Dawning Awareness

I am evaluating what I’ve been doing for the last few months. I see LOTS of painting starts. I don’t see many finished paintings. It’s obvious that I am in transition. I keep jumping out of the starting gate, but the races are not being won. They’re not even being completed. This dawning awareness is somewhat painful . . . but I am determined to push through. I think I need another workshop with Jeane. She possesses an amazing facility to push you into employing your crap as

    Enough Is Enough

Jeane handed me a 3 word note at the workshop I took from her in Southampton: Edit.Allow access. A recent post tells you something about Jeane’s editing process. She possesses a ruthless ability to sweep away excess. As for me, she added a further suggestion to edit MY LIFE, at least as it pertains to art (which just about covers all of it). You see, I came to the workshop with about 8 full boxes of supplies (it was for a whole 5 days, right?) and Jeane made me put away every

    Above and Below

My friend, Diane Kramer (aka she wolf), created this piece (among many significant others) at a course we both took in Southampton from Jeane Myers. I felt prompted to write a poem when I saw the piece again on her Flickr page: The Blue Suitcase Originally uploaded by she wolf- Above and Below Where else would you be, little one, but above the bed, having been pulled so far from family and friends that your etheric cord is stretched taut as longing. …. A blue suitcase, tucked

Just Because They’re Small Doesn’t Mean They Lack Power

Here are a few perfect examples of why I am so attracted to Jeane‘s paintings: Untitled ~ by Jeane Myers Untitled ~ by Jeane Myers Jeane sent a post from Southampton, where she is artist in residence for May 2010, to her blog, saying “I just wanted to stop and say hello and pop up a couple little paintings to give you an idea of the work I’ve been doing.” Those little paintings had a profound effect on me, especially the first one. In it, I see my small and broken self, the o

The Person You Know You Are Inside

Life is full when you have so much on the go that you don’t get around to writing on your blog. I hear someone muttering: “C’mon, Carol, you can always find time to post.” Was that you, Flora? Yesterday I read Mary Buchanan’s April offering. She had not posted for about 2 months. Did I notice her lack of posting before she pointed it out? No. That is not a reflection on Mary, but has to do with my focus on my own art making, writing, speaking etc. But Mary really caught my at

    Taking Risks With Jeane Myers

I’ve written about her before, and when I read on Artit that Jeane was coming to Ontario, I signed up right away for the class she will be teaching at Southampton Art School. It happens in the beginning of May. Jeane uses oils and encaustic. I’m an acrylic lover. But that is inconsequential: I love her spirit, her attitude, her style. I am ready to take risks alongside this fearless leader, who continually demonstrates the “going deeper” with her art that she advises to other

I Do It Because I Love It

I get excited when things coalesce. In fact, I taste honey on my tongue just saying the word coalesce. It’s like licking a favorite color. I received a book in the mail today, ART revolution: alternative approaches for fine artists and illustrators, by Lisa L. Cyr. Cyr wastes no time in challenging readers of her book to “Create from the heart, innovate, strive for greatness and speak to the culture in ways that inspire and motivate.” A few pages later, she decries the “expec
